This is a highly practical module that will introduce you to key concepts of quantitative methods and quantitative research. You’ll acquire an understanding of the most common quantitative methods you’re likely to use or come across in business applications.

What are quantitative methods courses?

Quantitative methods emphasize objective measurements and the statistical, mathematical, or numerical analysis of data collected through polls, questionnaires, and surveys, or by manipulating pre-existing statistical data using computational techniques.

The module will incorporate different types of quantitative study and address issues such as:

  • Explore quantitative methods for business
  • How to use quantitative research techniques appropriately
  • How to formulate quantitative questions
  • Sampling methods
  • Validity process of quantitative research

You’ll learn how to use a spreadsheet together with VBA and basic Python to solve business related problems. The course also gives you an understanding and appreciation of the power of statistical packages like Excel in executing some of the techniques covered.

If you wish to review or to get the basics in quantitative methods, this is the right course you.  If you are a beginner in quantitative methodology, this course lays a solid foundation in terms of key aspects like research design, sampling, measurements and ethics. For those who are working, it provides very good opportunity to review the methods being used and to explore the possible new enterprises in the field of quantitative methods and techniques.

Module Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, you’ll be able to:

  • Classify data into information in appropriate forms
  • Apply the basic problem-solving techniques to analyse data
  • Apply these principles of quantitative analysis to business problems and assess the resulting outcomes
  • Interpret basic descriptive statistics
  • Present data in a useful form as tables and graphs

 What to expect

The quantitative methods online course will involve a combination of lectures regarding the theoretical components of the module, with practical demonstration and applications. Furthermore, the module is complemented by assignments that give you the extra depth so you can learn to great extent about the nuts and bolts of effective quantitative methods. In learning the use of applications, you’ll engage in practical work in class and outside of class hours. 

Because it’s a first-year module, the theory part is pertinent to an entry level course and you’ll spend time solving related problems.

Skills for the labour market

You’ll learn a job-relevant skill that you can use in today’s challenging job market.  

The module will address some of the key recommendations on future skills needed in the ICT area. Our main goal is to provide a focused response to employment issues arising from the COVID-19 crisis and to increase the employment prospects of our graduates. This module provides the opportunity for you to gain important ICT skills which are vital for competitiveness and employability in any sector.

The module course is offered through the Springboard initiative. This course is free for eligible jobseekers, returners, carers and those who are formerly self-employed and offered at a significantly subsidised rate (90%) to eligible applicants in employment via the Higher Education Authority Springboard+ initiative.

Course Structure

The Quantitative Methods module is part of our Bachelor of Business Level 7 degree.

This module is an 18-week part-time programme and it’s delivered part time in a flexible manner through blended or online learning to allow people to gain important skills without taking a considerable period away from the labour market and family life.

Part-time classes will typically run once per week for 1 hour and here is a breakdown of the total hours.

Entry requirements

The course does not presume any previous knowledge of quantitative methods.

Applicants under 23 need a Leaving Certificate with 5 passes or a QQI Level 5 equivalent. Applicants over the age of 23 can apply on the basis of age and experience. Galway Business School also has an active RPL policy.

You will be asked to provide the following documents at the application stage: 

  •  Completed GBS Application Form
  • Proof of age – Copy of Identification (Passport/Drivers Licence/Birth Certificate)
  • Detailed CV – presenting a working history
  • References Details of any training completed Certificates for qualifications, training courses etc. Professional licenses/registrations or membership of professional organisations 
  • As part of the application process learners will be asked to attend an informal interview with GBS Academic Staff.

After completing this module, you can begin to pursue a possible career with the business sector.  If you would like to further your academic career, you can choose to continue your studies through our Bachelor of Business  programme. Students would be exempted from this module within the degree course.
