International Pre-Master Programme in Galway, Ireland

The Programme

The Pre-Masters Programme at Galway Business School is a one-year full-time course for international graduates preparing to enter a taught master's degree in Ireland.

The jump from undergraduate to master's-level study is real, and it's sharper for students working in a second language. This programme is built to close that gap on three fronts at once: English for academic purposes, postgraduate research and writing skills, and business content at the level your master's will expect.

The Pre-Masters Programme is non-award pathway provision: a preparatory programme, not a QQI award, and it doesn't sit on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). On successful completion you receive a Galway Business School certificate of completion that documents your readiness to enter a taught master's.

What you'll learn:

By the end of the programme you'll be able to:

  • Identify and work on your own strengths and weaknesses in academic English, and significantly lift your IELTS score.
  • Communicate clearly in writing and in person, at a level expected of a postgraduate student.
  • Think, read and write critically — evaluating arguments rather than simply summarising them.
  • Apply the essentials of business research methods and recognise which approaches suit which business decisions.
  • Prepare application materials — CV, cover letter, personal statement — that show you at your best.
  • Use research skills to gather and evaluate information to support your entry to master's-level study.
  • Manage, analyse and present data in written, spoken and IT-based formats.
  • Draw on your time in Ireland — its literature, music, sport and language — in your own academic and cultural reflection.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must hold a recognised undergraduate degree qualification.

For non-native speakers a minimum IELTS 6.0 with no individual component less than 5.0 from a recognised IELTS testing centre is necessary. If you do not meet the minimum English language requirements for direct entry to the Pre-Masters year, you must undertake one of our English language programmes to bring you up to the requisite level for Postgraduate study.

How the programme is delivered

The programme runs full-time over one academic year, with English language modules delivered by Galway Cultural Institute and business modules by Galway Business School lecturers. Class sizes are small, and there's regular contact with your lecturers across both sides of the programme.

Assessment

Assessment is a mix of continuous assessment and end-of-module examinations. Continuous assessment takes various forms: written work, individual and group projects, mock interviews and presentations, so that you move into your master's used to the full range of postgraduate assessment.

Entry requirements

Academic: a recognised undergraduate degree, or an equivalent qualification.

English: a minimum IELTS 6.0 with no individual component below 5.0, from a recognised IELTS testing centre. Equivalent qualifications are accepted.

Progression Routes

Successful completion of the Pre-Masters Programme is a recognised bridge from an undergraduate qualification into master's-level study. Graduates progress to taught master's programmes at Irish higher education institutions; students may also use their results to apply to providers in the UK.

The research, writing and analytical skills you'll build on the programme are equally relevant once you're in employment — whether with an SME in the west of Ireland or a larger multinational.

Student voice

"I found all the teachers in the Galway Business School to be incredibly helpful and friendly throughout my study. They always wanted students to achieve the most they were capable of."

— Loic De Saint Leon, GBS Graduate
