Galway Business School | Orientation

Orientation

Your first day at Galway Business School is your introduction to the people, the place and the systems that will be part of your studies for the year ahead. Orientation is designed to settle you in, to help you find your way around the school, meet your lecturers and classmates, and leave with a clear sense of what to expect from your programme.

When orientation takes place

Orientation is held the week before classes begin for each intake. You will receive your orientation date, time and location by email from our Admissions team once your enrolment is confirmed. International students arriving in Ireland for the first time are welcome to come to our campus in Salthill any weekday in the week before orientation if you would like to drop in, ask questions, or get your bearings before the formal day.

Who you will meet

Orientation is led by the GBS academic team, supported by colleagues across student services and administration. Over the course of the day you will meet:

  • GBS Academic Manager
  • GBS Registrar
  • GBS Managing Director / CEO
  • Your Programme Coordinators/ Lecturers
  • The Office Manager and administrative staff who handle day-to-day queries
  • The Student Supports team, who look after welfare, learning supports and any concerns that come up during the year
  • Your classmates — the people you will be working alongside for the duration of your programme

We keep our intakes small by design, so by the end of orientation you will already know most of the names and faces around the school.

What you will receive

Each student receives information on:

  • Your Student Handbook, which sets out the structure of your course, module descriptors, assessment arrangements, key dates, and the academic regulations that apply
  • Your lecture timetable for the semester
  • Your GBS student account details for Moodle, the Student Portal and the online library
  • A Student Guide covering the school's policies on attendance, assessment, academic integrity, dignity and respect, complaints and appeals, and the supports available to you
  • Practical information on living in Galway, including transport, healthcare, banking and part-time work entitlements where relevant

You will be given access Moodle (VLE) to read through the information and access it in your time, and staff will be on hand to answer any questions before you head into your first week of classes.

A tour of the school

Orientation closes with a guided tour of the school premises, our campus located in Salthill, Galway. We will show you the classrooms, the student common areas, the library and study spaces, and the administrative offices, so on day one of classes, you know exactly where you need to be.

For students living in our residential accommodation, the Accommodation Office will be available during orientation to answer any questions about your stay.

Support throughout your studies

Orientation is the start of an ongoing relationship. Throughout the year you can call on:

  • Academic supports: one-to-one meetings, study-skills workshops, and assignment guidance
  • Welfare and pastoral supports: a confidential point of contact for any personal, financial or wellbeing concerns
  • Careers and progression advice: guidance on job searches, internships, further study and graduate employment
  • Ongoing supports: help with our learning systems, research and referencing

Before you arrive

To make the most of your orientation, please:

  • Bring photo ID (passport or driving licence) and any documents requested in your acceptance letter
  • Have your acceptance email or student number to hand
  • Arrive a few minutes early so we can check you in and get the day started on time
